Dual process theory is one of the dominant theories of thinking today. According to this theory, there are two modes of thinking; i.e., System 1 and System 2 processes. Although there are several differentiating features between System 1 and System 2 processes, the defining feature of System 1 processes is automaticity, which allows us to "automatic", fast decision-making, whereas, the defining feature of System 2 processes is the analytical ability to compare and contrast various options for us to choose.

Note: The word "system" (as in System 1, System 2) and the word "Type" (as in Type 1, Type 2) thinking are often used inter-changeably.
